Final Resting Place

At the cul-de-sac at the end of Memorial Road, one finds the graves of the nine men who died aboard RCAF Lancaster 965 on July 31st, 1950. A low-altitude cargo drop went terribly wrong when the parachute cords caught the tail of the aircraft and fouled the controls, causing it to plunge catastrophically into the ground just a few hundred metres from the camp.

An attempt was made to recover the bodies a week later when a Canso float plane landed in Dumbell Bay, but the added weight caused an aborted takeoff and damage to the aircraft when it struck ground. Following this, all nine men were interred near the end of the runway (which was still under construction at this point), where they lie to this day.
