Wind Shadow

Strange and wonderful things happen to snow when the temperature is consistently below -30. The nearly constant, punishing wind hardens it, making it solid enough to walk on while hardly leaving a mark, but it also shapes it by carving away small particles and throwing them into drifts, a permanent impression of the ephemeral breeze. Here, a fine layer of hoar frost has also formed on top of the snow, giving it a fuzzy, delicate appearance.
