One of the common species of lichen in the Arctic, Xanthoria elegans, the “elegant sunburst”, appears as vivid patches of orange and white on rocks. It grows at such a precise rate, 0.5 mm per year, that its size can be used to determine the age of whatever surface lies beneath – a science known as lichenometry.
