Ice Cave

Nestled in the valley of Kirk Creek, about ten kilometres due south of Alert, ice caves can often be found in the summer months. These majestic formations are usually transitory, lasting only a single season before they collapse and a new one forms the following year. The process of creation, carved upwards from the riverbed by rushing meltwater, was stalled in the case of this particular cave. Winter’s cold set in before it could completely melt and the outlet was sealed by ice, trapping an even pond of water on its floor. This photo was taken during its second summer in existence, when the two years of meltwater had created a fairytale scene of icicles and delicate crystals.
